About the project

NetflixAddicts started as a Discord server for people who watch a lot of series, and grew a bot to go with it. The ency command searched a catalogue of shows by title or by genre and returned paginated embeds, while a suggest command let members propose the entries that were missing. The catalogue was never scraped from anywhere: it was whatever the community had bothered to add. Around the bot came the usual community plumbing: private voice channels created on demand and torn down when empty, audio playback, presence management, and a Twitter bridge for announcements. The bot was written in TypeScript on discord.js and published under Apache 2.0. A showcase site was designed alongside it. The home page was laid out, the encyclopedia page never got past a wireframe, and the whole thing stayed a prototype. A Go API was started to back it and abandoned three days later. Two rewrites were planned and never written: a client/server split in late 2020, and a Next.js front in early 2021. Both repositories still hold nothing but a README. The six repositories were archived, and the project stands as a reminder that a community can outlive the software written for it.

Search by title or genre from Discord, with paginated results rendered as embeds

Community-sourced catalogue

Members proposed the shows that were missing, so the catalogue grew with the server

Channels created on demand for a group and removed once everyone had left

Audio playback

Voice channel playback handled through ffmpeg, with join and leave commands

Showcase site

A home page and an encyclopedia layout, designed and prototyped but never finished

Challenges encountered

  • Presenting a catalogue inside Discord, where the only layout available is a paginated embed

  • Keeping a catalogue useful when its content depends entirely on member submissions

  • Creating and destroying voice channels without leaving empty rooms behind

  • Six repositories for one project, with the bot, the site, the design, and the API all living apart

Key learnings

  • The bot was used daily, the website never shipped: the surface people already live in wins

  • The Discord server held the value, the software was only one way of serving it

  • Two rewrites were started from a blank repository and neither was finished

  • Building a community around someone else's brand caps how far the project can be taken

Future perspectives

All six repositories are archived and read-only
